Get that weak shit off my track!
Here is my current plan for self improvement:
Phase 1 - 3,000 30 second gesture drawings
I plan to use quickposes.com to do approximately one hundred 30 second gesture drawings per day for a month. I’m going to number each drawing so I know where i stand (I’m currently at 114). When I reach 3,000 I plan to move on to—
Phase 2 - 1,000 2 minute gesture drawings
I’m going to take what I hope I’ve learned from the 30 second sketches and build it out with two minute drawings. I’ll try to layer on more detailed anatomy and better proportions. Once I’ve got 1,000 of these done, the next step is—
Phase 3 - 1,000 - 45 second gesture drawings
I split the difference between phase one and two with medium length gesture drawings. Hopefully by this point I’ll be able to render a halfway decent figure in 45 seconds. By the time I hit 1,000, it’s time to put myself to the test with—
Phase 4 - Life-Drawing Session
So far every life-drawing session I’ve been to, while fun, has been an exercise in frustration. I never felt my skill-level was enough to merit a person standing perfectly still for hours on end, and God forbid the models actually went around and looked at people’s work. Hopefully by the time I finish the first three phases of my plan, my figure drawing will have improved enough to make a life-drawing workshop worthwhile. This leads directly to—
Phase 5 - Self-Assessment
Am I better now than I was when I started? If not, why not? This is where I decide on my next step. I may even cycle back to phase one if I don’t feel I’ve made enough progress.
The famous quote is that every artist has a hundred thousand bad drawings in them. By the time I finish this phase 5, I’ll be at least one twentieth of the way done. So where do you, my faithful tumblr follower, come in? Glad you asked.
I plan to post every thousandth drawing
Posing 5,000+ drawings would be tedious and unnecessary, especially when the vast majority of them are quick gesture sketches. Instead I’ll post every thousandth picture I produce,
The reason I’m posting about this at all is so that I’ll feel rightfully ashamed if I fall short of my goal. Realistically, each phase should take about a month, give or take. By August 27th of this year, I should be finished with phase 3.
My attempt to get this cat pose from Preston Blair. A lot of quick ones in rapid succession.
Just finished my first “draw 100” exercise. I drew a hundred of the Loomis mannequin. None of them were worth scanning, so I doodled a quick one in Manga Studio as an illustrative concept.
This is what I’ve been doing for the past month. One exercise from the Preston Blair book every day. Sometimes it was a little rushed. My first real foray into animation.
